This native-tanned buffalo bag is a classic examples of indigenous recycling. The bag likely started off its life as a part of a larger bandolier bag. However, the extermination of the buffalo herds by the mid-1870s made the supply of preferred buffalo hide scarce, thereby forcing Plains artists to be industrious in reusing that which was available when items got damaged. This bag - as evidenced by its aged straps on its backside - was clearly reconfigured for its hide and beautiful artwork.
