Jicarilla Apache Bowcase and Quiver Set / Ex George Cuneo, CO (1852-1939)
Apache bowmakers were among the most prolific on the Plains and in Southwest. Perhaps this stemmed from their limited access to guns. Whatever the case, the quiver sets became a preferred weapon of choice for Apache warriors.
This set was collected by George Cuneo (1852-1939), an early Denver-based collector whose collection today partly resides at the Denver Art Museum. An early photo of his study - now at the Denver Art Museum - may indeed show this exact quiver suspended from his wall.
This sets accompanying bow and arrow remnants all appear to be contemporaneous and original to the set. That the set was collected early on, and labeled as “Jicarilla” by Cuneo - a tribe to which Cuneo would have had close access from Denver - perhaps explains why the quiver set is in such superb condition.
39” long (bowcase); 25” long (quiver); 44” long (bow)
